I am an American that has taken some cuttings of my life, and traveled down under to plant them and start new roots in the Land of Oz. As of late, my life has been like a fairy tale, but with a modern twist, of course. Like Cinderella, (or any of the princesses when you really think about it), I was working all the time, and then one day out of the blue, I decided that I needed a very overdue vacation. I got on today’s vision of a coach (airplane), flew down to Sydney, and boarded a cruise ship for Fiji (The Ball). The airline, thinking my brand spankin’ new red luggage was pretty, decided to hold back the one piece of luggage that held majority of my clothes so they could admire it. That meant for the first seven of the twelve days of the ball, err, cruise, I didn’t have any underwear (that’s Disney-speak for glass slipper). Lack of clothing was in no way a deterrent, seeing how I was motivated to have a good time no matter what was waiting for me. Well, what was waiting for me was my prince. He talked funny, but he was still my prince. My Aussie prince. Five months later, we got married in Vegas by Elvis (who else? Thank you. Thank you very much), and I moved to Sydney to find my happily ever after. For those of you that know me quite well, I want you to know that I took a plane to get to Oz, and not a flying house like most would imagine. I do not own a pair of ruby slippers, so when I go back to the states to visit, I need to fly in a plane like everyone else. (Besides, my broom is in the shop, and the flying monkey’s union won’t let them carry passengers longer than 30 minutes.)
I decided that I should document what I am finding in this wonderful exciting new land, so this is the reason I am writing this blog. My goal is to both inform, and entertain, because I sure have been since I got here. Enjoy.
Jay, I’m really enjoying your posts, or whatever you call them, here! Very informative and fun! I’ll look forward to the next one!
Glad you’re enjoying my blog. My goal is to post once a week, so I am going to have to come up with a whole lota subjects….I figured I have a lot to say, and we should send it out to the universe, so what better way than to have a blog?
Hey Jay! I randomly found your account while looking for pictures of the Winterlight Festival in Parramatta, for my own blog.
I’m in a bit of the same situation; Canadian living in Australia and really loving it. I’m looking forward to reading more of your blog; especially since I recognize most of the places! Thanks!!!
Hi! Welcome to Oz! I’ve been here about 2 1/2 years now, and I really love it. We live in Parramatta, but I try to write about Oz as a whole. We do travel a lot, so that is why there are big gaps in my postings.(right now I am working on postings for my travel blog) If you’re around Parramatta, we should get together and do lunch.
Hi there! I just stumbled upon your blog after searching about fairy bread! Ha! I find your blog informative and delightful – you’re quite funny! It just so happens that I’m also from Michigan..grew up in the suburbs near Detroit, and I’m currently living in Beijing, China. Even though we’re in very different cities, I can totally relate to the differences you’ve experienced moving to such a new country. I do hope you plan to continue posting from time to time – I love hearing about Oz, and hope to explore your new home country someday. 🙂
Kindly,
Jen
Hi Jen
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I am starting to get back to my blogging, so stay tuned! I am from Detroit, so we grew up in the same part of the world! What took you to China? How long have you been there, and how long are you staying? Isn’t it amazing where life takes us!
So lovely of you to reply! My husband’s work brought us here (he’s a physician/scientist who specializes in cardiology and genetics). A 3 month trial period turned into 18 months so far, and looks like we’ll be around another year. Our two boys (15&10) attend school here, and studied Mandarin before coming. They have been having the experience of a lifetime along with us, but we do miss the states. The boys and I will be heading home to MI in a few weeks to visit family, and a much needed break. I hope to head up north a bit! It’s been a wild whirlwind since we’ve landed, and I do regret not blogging about it. I keep saying I will.. Anyways, nice to meet you, and I look forward to any future posts from you! x
